Allow TD to repeat round robin pairings multiple times in a tournament stage

1 - allow the possibility to play elimination type tourneys as a series of multiple matches between two players (like in snooker tournaments, best of 3 matches, best of 5 matches, or even best of 9 matches etc), so the player who advances the round will be the one who wins 2 out of 3 matches for example
2 - allow the possibility for Round-Robin format to be played in 2 rounds (or why not, even more), so each player plays against each other players twice
3 - allow the possibility to play Swiss type format using more than 3 lives (up to 5 lives would be great) DONE!

double round robin

hi. It would be great if you could enable a round robin format where players can meet each other more than once (twice or thrice i.e.), would that be within the realms of what is possible?
Kind regards

Henrik Bodholdt (megatyr2023), thanks for the suggestion. There is a long standby request for this and I'll merge your request with that one... Will get to it at some point!
Are you already running tournaments yourself on Hub?

Another idea, a recent friendly tournament at our club used an idea that you have to win the match AND THE PR(!) to proceed to the next round, a bit like the old galaxy rating system. If you didn't win match+PR then the match had to be replayed. I know the PR here is not a high analysis, but we would be happy to use the PR generated.

Nick Thorpe (denixuk): I don't like that system. And especially here where once I've seen my PR stating 3.49 but XG said 5.25 !

Denis-George Constantin (playhunter): you don't need to use it... but it gives an option for those who would want it :) i have also found the PR here (calculated from from GNUBG) to be very generous... but it goes for both players.

Nick Thorpe (denixuk): I worry that, in this scheme, tournaments could go on forever if a very lucky player comes up against a very skilled player! I also agree with Denis-George that it is an invite for players to criticise the quality of PR compared to XG. I've been pleasantly surprised that this is not a regular gripe from players and don't want to invite trouble...

Swiss with 5 lives is now possible. I also added option to limit the number of rounds in this type of tournament. This was requested by Yvonne Pasali (Norway). In this case she will run a tournament of 16 players where players have 2 lives. After 3 rounds the two players on 3 wins will play each other for 1st and 2nd place and the remaining 6 players who are not eliminated will play a single round to give 3 players on joint 3rd place.
Where do you dream up these crazy tournament formats...?!

I like all 3 ideas, gives organizer much more flexibility. for example in number 1, players won't be eliminated just by 1 game which is not usual in backgammon. in number 2, organizer can create a league.

Alireza Torkamani (arty125): league format is possible already using groups. After each season a new tournament is created (copying existing groups and players) and players are moved between groups for promotion/demotion. This works with swiss or round robin, depending on the group size. UKBGF are using this for online league divisions 16-19 with higher divisions hopefully coming over in Jan... https://backgammonhub.com/tournament/ukbgf-2022Q4

Hi Denis-George, I can certainly do the 3rd item easily. The other two would be quite a bit of work and I'm not sure many TDs would use them, but will keep this issue open and people can vote for it!
