Part of the fun of playing our game is shaking and rolling your own dice.
I believe it would be great to have this option when starting a match.
Input could simply be a text box for ‘52’, ‘33’, ‘41’ etc, which would be fast.
Players could use video call to show their dice if there are trust issues.
This would be a unique feature on online platforms.

It's the moment you've all been waiting for... 😂
Manual dice have arrived!!!
Currently only available in play-a-friend matches. To enable click the Configure button when setting up a match and select the manual dice option.

Backgammon Hub Admin brilliant !!! I find it very user friendly. Love it !
But when the match ends, instead to display the summary info of the match, it gives an error "Cannot read properties of null (reading 'endsWith')" and because of it we can not review the match online and neither download the match file.

Denis-George Constantin (playhunter) good catch - should be fixed now!

Alfie Kirkpatrick [Developer] thank you ! That issue is fixed (yay). But found that it does not work in combination with Sassangammon - for that variant players would need 3 rows, in order to select their 3 dice roll.
And as a side issue, also just found out that now in Sassangammon mode (the normal one, with no manual rolls) you no longer start with 3 dice from the opening roll, but with only 2 dice instead. - Why is that ? We discussed this aspect in the past and agreed that it is best to use the Portes opening method (where each player roll 1 die, then the winner rolls again with all his dice) instead of the Backgammon opening method (where each player roll 1 die and then the winner makes the move), because this way we will eliminate the best opening rolls (61-31-42), with the trade off that 1 in 36 games a player will start with a double (when all 3 dice will be the same).
I am 100% sure that in the past this was the way Sassan openings worked: each player rolled 1 die, then the winner of the toss rolled with all 3 dice.

Backgammon Hub Admin Thanks so much for this. The only slightly confusing thing is when starting games, there needs to be a message saying ‘You’ve both rolled the same number, please roll again’. That’s the only thing that confused us. Otherwise it’s perfect!

Denis-George Constantin (playhunter) was aware of the Sassangammon issue but didn't think anyone would notice... should have known you would though 😂
Not aware of changing the opening roll on Sassangammon but will take a look.

Alan Berlyn 🇬🇧 (66alan66) was aware this is not very user friendly, but honestly wasn't sure if anyone would use the manual roll feature, so left it! Will try to improve it.

Alfie Kirkpatrick [Developer] I guess they won't use it if it isn't promoted much. I really enjoyed my first match last night. It felt much more like playing in person with all the rolling.

Alan Berlyn 🇬🇧 (66alan66) should be improved now. It shows the roll you made and if dice match, shows both dice as below.

Denis-George Constantin (playhunter) I checked my commit history and there is a comment "Fix sassangammon initial roll" where I removed the Portes behaviour. But it was November last year and I cannot remember why... 😔
If this is important, can you create another post for it as I'd like to close this one.

this has great potential as mentioned
i can totally envisage its application in a live tournament setting
this is the future of tournament backgammon in my opinion
real dice played online
less space requirements for participants, laptops are less space consuming than boards
transcription is automatic
no cheating or miscounting of checkers during movements
Also, playing like this will save so much more time which will allow for better quality and easier management of tournaments

A fair suggestion if "implementable". If both opponents opt for this they could play a game with real dice. Again, not sure how much development would be needed - but if possible and feasible..

Such feature can be used in offline tournaments (assuming attending people will accept to play on laptops but with real dice). They both should sit on the same part of the table (like students sit in a classroom) so they can see each other's screens. Then bye bye illegal moves. Also, as a bonus, the players will get match transcription without any effort.
But for online play, yes, webcam showing the roll is a must. It can be done with an additional usb webcam and a dice tower with a dice tray - this setup would be needed by both players, if each player will roll for himself.

Denis-George Constantin (playhunter) Additional webcam is only necessary where the players don't trust each other. Once you see your opponent getting terrible rolls as well as good ones, you'll learn to trust they are inputting the genuine rolls.

Is this really something people want?? This seems like sticking forks in your eyes to me and a recipe for arguments... let's see how many votes it gets!

Alfie Kirkpatrick [Developer]In what respect sticking the forks Alfie? Tedious to input them? I think it would soon become second nature. Well worth it to know they're real dice rolls. However sophisticated computer rolls are, some (not me) will always doubt their validity.
